Why is my dog breathing so fast?

Most of the time if your dog is panting they may be excited or just finished exercise and they're trying to cool down. Panting when your dog is hot is very rarely a sign of heat stroke. Dogs also start breathing fast if they are fearful or under stress - perhaps they are in an unfamiliar environment. In serious cases, respiratory distress is a cardinal sign of congestive heart failure.
